There is no shortage of shows coming to the Philadelphia area this summer, with acts ranging from new artists to classic rock legends. With so many concerts to choose from it is difficult to pick out the must-see shows, but following are some of the highlights coming your way in the next few months.
Pearl Jam fans are getting a rare treat as front-man Eddie Vedder embarks on a short solo tour this month, and Philadelphia is one of only eight locations where he will play. The two Philly shows, which sold out immediately, will take place this Thursday and Friday, June 11 and 12, at Tower Theater. New Zealand singer/songwriter Liam Finn will open for Vedder again, having joined him on his previous solo tour in support of the Into the Wild soundtrack in 2008.
Also on Friday June 12, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood will play together at the Wachovia Center. The former members of Blind Faith appeared together for three shows in 2007 at Madison Square Garden, but this will be their first full tour together since 1969. Other classic rock pairings on tour this summer are Billy Joel and Elton John at Citizens Bank Park on July 30 and August 1, and the Allman Brothers Band and Widespread Panic at the Susquehanna Bank Center on August 21.
Following the Roots Picnic this past Saturday, Festival Pier has several shows lined up for this summer that are sure to be a good time. 311, Ziggy Marley and The Expendables will play on June 30, Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dogg bring their "Blazed and Confused" tour on August 7, Jason Mraz and G. Love and Special Sauce come on August 9 and O.A.R. on August 18.
Following the incredible success of their self-titled debut album last year, the Fleet Foxes will play at the Electric Factory on July 30 in one of only eight U.S. stops. Other shows coming up at the Electric Factory are Sonic Youth on July 2 and Matisyahu and Umphrey's McGee on July 18.
Finally, it seems like no summer would be complete without the obligatory Jimmy Buffett and Dave Matthews Band concerts. Jimmy Buffett will play at the Susquehanna Bank Center on June 18 and 20, and the Dave Matthews Band, who just released the album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, will come to Susquehanna Bank Center September 19 and 20.
