Last night, I had the pleasure of witnessing the folks from Black Scale at work as they conducted their photo shoots for their latest look book. Directed by Mega (founder of Black Scale) and photographed by Tim Mar, the shots alike their past look books had an edgy undertone with minimalist attitudes that reflected and highlighted each piece of clothing. With the theme of Positive Energy and transforming into one’s Existence, the images for each shot were surrounded by this idea through simple staging at their recently developed pop-up store. Though a very minimalist shoot with limited amount of props, the props were creatively chosen and strongly fitting. The most vital props included their wall backdrop by Apex, ladder, and mirror, all giving unique symbolization to emphasize the concept of positive energy. The shots highlight some of their graphic tees for Summer ’09, and feeds a quick glance to what the brand will carry in the near future – sunglasses and denim.
Witnessing how their creative juices flowed was an inspiration in itself from an artist perspective. Having not met Mega until that night and seeing his ability to switch gears from being openly welcoming, then to working his direction with the shoots, showed his strong passion and diligence towards his work. All shots were visualized and fulfilled as he worked both as the stylist and creative director. Studying this field first-hand in school, I know the fruits and labor of the job – the constant pre-meditations of each shot and any substitutions that may be needed instantly, making the work viciously spontaneous and sometimes discouraging. This was not the case of last night’s atmosphere, though everyone was hard at work giving participation, concentration, and input when needed, everyone was also laid-back with jams filling the workplace and the Lakers/Magic score being constantly updated throughout the night. The whole experience was almost zen-like – an example of great organization and visualization, non-apparent chaos, and a constant flow of creativity that supported their concepts, clothing, and brand philosophies.
