Everyone loves a good fireworks display. And this weekend, in Omaha, if you plan on lighting off some for your own family, it is best to keep in mind these simple safety tips when lighting--and observing--nearby fireworks with your children:
Protect yourself.
It is suggested that one way to keep your family safe on Independence Day is to have whoever is lighting your fireworks wear safety goggles or some sort of eye protection. This is in the event a firework goes off unexpectedly. Smoking is highly discouraged near fireworks and firework stands, and it's best to keep cigarettes as far away from the fireworks as possible. Also, NEVER light fireworks intoxicated. Please have a sober, non-drinking family member ignite fireworks during your displays.
Follow the local Omaha laws.
Contact the Omaha Police Department to check the laws on buying, selling and using fireworks within the Omaha city limits. A police officer will be able to explain what is and is not allowed in the area. As of this year, the selling of fireworks is NOT allowed within the Omaha area, but this may change in the near future due to discussions within Omaha.
Be prepared.
Have water available at all times to put out fireworks or to dispose of malfunctioning, or "dud," fireworks. Only ignite and use fireworks on a flat, open area away from people and property. If the evening ends up being windy, use special care or postpone lighting fireworks altogether. Light only one firework at a time.
Use common sense.
Use a punk to light your fireworks so that you can be as far away from the firework as possible when igniting. Light, then quickly get away. Do not stand near or around the fireworks. Only use fireworks outdoors, and keep away from animals and pets that may frighten easily from the noises. Do not light fireworks in grass, or dry conditions due to fire risks.
Keep children away.
Even something as simple as a sparkler can harm a child. Keep all children away from fireworks, but definitely let them watch and enjoy the show!
Have a happy, safe 4th of July, everyone!
