Yesterday Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison. His actions were a disgusting display of greed and his ponzi scheme has hurt many families in the United States and elsewhere.
Imagining what the future looks like for his victims can be frightening. It can remind us all that the environment is unstable and we’re not sure what the future will hold.
Today’s Gospel, Mt 8:23-27, is the well-known story where Jesus and the disciples are on a boat and a storm engulfs them. Jesus is asleep, and the scared disciples wake Him and ask for salvation from the storm. Without hesitation, Jesus calms the wind and the waves.
Looking at the Madoff story and thinking about the future it is easy to become overwhelmed and feel lost and afraid. But we are the luckiest people in the world because we have our faith.
We can turn to Jesus, just as the disciples did. We can ask him to calm the storm and to save us from our fear. In the poem “Footprints in the sand,” we know that in times of trial God carries us. No matter how bad it gets, we are never alone.
Mass ends with “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” Go in peace. Even in times like these where bad things happen and the environment is unstable we are given the best gift of all – God’s peace. It is my prayer that we remember that as we face these trying times and turn to Jesus, because He is there and He will carry us through this trying time.
