Weekend activities October 10-12

October 9, 1:50 PM

Cheaper (and more fun) than school pictures
The weather is supposed to be in the low 70’s and partly sunny this weekend which is the perfect weather for picture-taking; so all you cheapos (or smarties) who didn’t buy those ridiculously expensive school photo packages get thee to a pumpkin patch and take some pictures of your kids or your friends or you to send to your grandparents. You will thank me later.

If you MUST start celebrating Halloween this early there is a fabulous and family-friendly (note the alliteration!) haunted house you absolutely can’t miss. The Haunted Winery usually has a line but is well worth the wait. Built in 1898, every room and closet has a surprise – most of them screamworthy.  Or you can head down to the Henry Ford Museum for the “Out of This World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television” exhibit. The exhibit is totally taking advantage of the introduction of Star Wars and Batman and Indiana Jones to the under-10 crowd and features original costumes from the movies. I’m sure as soon as my son finds out about it we will be headed down to Dearborn.

If you’re tired of your usual dining spots, Brian Polcyn’s relatively new Forest Grill in Birmingham just received a 4-star review. And it deserves every single star, I dined there in August and have been dreaming of returning ever since. The staff is friendly, without sitting on your lap or drawing their name in a cute way on your tablecloth, and know their specials and their wine. Plus, it has two exterior walls made of glass so everyone can look in and see you eating in the newest hot spot. Dress nice!

On Friday night I will be attending I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at the Tipping Point Theater in Northville. The show is so popular I had to be put on a waiting list for these tickets! Then on Saturday I will be working in the concession stand at the Plymouth Whaler’s game at Compuware Arena as a fundraiser for my daughter’s skating team. I know; it’s a glamorous life. Stop on by and order some fries.
