Pizza is a beloved food around the world; there are few who don’t care for the savory pie! As time goes on, more and more creative interpretations of the dish arise. Nonetheless, the classics shall not be forgotten, and considering their popularity that is unlikely. One of the oldest known pizza recipes is Pizza Margherita, which traditionally consists of, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil. This simple, yet delightful arrangement of toppings is not as random as it might seem.
In June 1889, a Neapolitan chef by the name of Raffaele Esposito wanted to honor a very special guest. Arriving to dine on this occasion was the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. The thoughtful chef, created a pizza garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil, to represent the colors of the Italian flag. The chef appropriately called his final product, "Pizza Margherita.”
