This is Men’s Health week, and Sunday is Father’s Day. It’s a good time to take care of the dads and other special men in our lives. When is the last time you talked to your dad or husband about his health? The American Cancer Society recommends that all men age 50 and over should be screened annually for prostate cancer, but you can request screenings earlier if you want.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. It is estimated that more than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and more than 27,000 will die from it. Fortunately, it is a slow-growing cancer with a very high rate of cure, but early detection is key.

To bring awareness to the fight against prostate cancer, the city of Boise holds its annual Main Street Mile event, presented by Saint Alphonsus, on June 26. Called “A Mile for Men’s Health,” it is a one-mile race through the streets of downtown Boise. You can run with your dad, or as a family. It’s a great way to show your support, have some fun, and get a little exercise. For complete details on the race, see the link in the more information section below.

In addition to the race, there are several other events which support the cause. You can join the Pete and Joe Prostate Posse and get a few extra goodies from the guys from J105 if you sign up before June 20. The Boise Hawks even get in on the action with Batting for Men’s Health, in which players will wear special jerseys throughout the season. The jerseys will then be auctioned off in support of A Mile for Men’s Health.

In conjunction with these fun events, The Main Street Mile will be offering free prostate cancer exams to men 40 and over from June 23 through 26. See the Main Street Mile web site for more details. There’s a link in the more information section below.

There’s still time to register, and if you register by June 20, the fee is only $15. Starting June 21, it goes up to $25. But it’s all for a good cause: proceeds are used to promote prostate cancer awareness, education, and provide free screenings for the men of the Treasure Valley.

Remember, prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men, so there’s a very good likelihood it could affect someone you love. Why not come out and support the cause, and encourage the men in your life to get screened?
