Run the road to the Final Four in Detroit

Have friends coming into town for the
NCAA Final Four Tournament in early April? Couldn’t care less about the games but just want to get in on some of the action in town? Lace up and head to Cobo Center on Saturday, April 4 for the
Road to the Final Four 5K Run/Walk. The event, brought to us by the NCAA, promises to be a fun way to kick off the festivities.
“This is a really great course. Everyone is really going to like the Detroit highlights along the way,” says Doug Kurtis, veteran runner and expert race director for the Road to the Final Four.
The centerpiece of the run is the
Detroit Riverwalk, a wonderful getaway from the bustle of the city, with some great views across the Detroit River to Windsor Canada. Your eyes will be as busy as your feet as you take in the
Cullen Family Carousel, the inlaid Detroit River map and the St. Lawrence Seaway sculpture. Keep your head up and enjoy the sparkling towers of the
Renaissance Center, too.
“I’m hoping for a lot of out-of-towners who are runners looking for something to do here in Detroit,” says Kurtis. “This is a race to enjoy and just have fun.”
A great race usually has a great cause behind it. The official website says:
Proceeds will benefit the NCAA Men’s Final Four Legacy Program, the United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s
Early Learning Communities. This program enhances school readiness for pre-school age children by providing training and resources for children and their caregivers. Race participants are encouraged to bring a new or gently-used pre-reader or early reader book to race registration.
Detroit Running Examiner Inside Tip for this race: You’ll be starting at the top of the Cobo ramp, so take it easy! Don’t torch your legs at the start. Ease your way down the ramp and then let go. Keep your head up for all the great sights Detroit has to offer.
