You are climbing the walls because winter just seems to drag on and on. The weather is much too unpredictable for tennis or softball and waterskiing is really just out of the question. So how do you feed the need to get outside and do something productive and fun?

Get out your calendar.

Visit Run Michigan and find yourself a 5K fun run that isn’t too far in the future, rush to your computer and register. Then you make a plan for getting in shape for that 5K.

Here are five good reasons to register for that first (or first in living memory) 5K run:

  • Having a date on the calendar will keep you honest. Having paid the entry fee for the race will keep you invested.
  • Hour for hour of training time, there’s no better way to get fit and stay fit than running.
  • Running is like a team sport. There are always folks about to help you along your way. Check out all the online support, and visit at your local running shop. You’ll have many questions, so get them answered!
  • Running is simple. You put on your shoes. You go outside. You run.  (Until you have questions -- then see point directly above.)
  • Even if you feel cold when you start out, you’ll sweat in no time. The March and April sunshine will feel just like July and August.

Below are some online resources for training for your first 5K. Find another you like? Share it with us by commenting below.

Have a great weekend, Detroit Runners! See you at the 5K!
