When deciding where to board a horse in the Sacramento area, one place worth checking out is Whimsical Farms, located at 9050 Bradshaw Road in Elk Grove, California—just a few miles from Sacramento. Whimsical Farms is a boarding and retirement/lay-up facility owned and managed by Lisa Dixon.

A Boarding Facility with Experienced Management

Although Dixon has only been operating Whimsical Farms for nine years, she brings 40 years of horse experience to the table. In addition, she spent 30 of those years as a boarder, so she knows first-hand what horse owners look for in a boarding stable.

“We compile a mental list of what we would and wouldn't do, what is important and less important in terms of care of the horse,” Dixon says. “I know what it's like to be a boarder and try my best not to put my boarders through that.”

The Whimsical Farms Facility

Whimsical Farms is a private facility with three dry pastures, all with matted shelters, four 12 x 14 stalls with attached runs, six other 12 x 14 box stalls and one 12x30 stall that can be used for medical rehab or as a mare and foal stall. Board includes use of the 60x105 lighted covered arena, 50-foot lighted all-weather round-pen and on-site trailer parking.

Personalized Boarding Facility Service

Whimsical Farms is a full-care facility. Board includes feed of grass hay and pelleted feed twice per day.
Dixon explains, “For the seniors, the hay supplements the pelleted feed, and for the others, the pelleted feed supplements the hay.”

Board also includes blanketing and putting on and taking off fly masks. Dixon orders wormers and administers them every 8-10 weeks and bills the client for the cost—which is usually at a discount, since she orders them in bulk from catalogues. She also schedules farrier appointments and pays the farrier, then bills the client for the cost in the month in which the service is performed.

For medical needs, Dixon schedules twice-yearly vaccination clinics. There is a veterinary clinic about a mile down the road, and if possible Dixon will take horses in need of veterinary care to the clinic rather than incurring a ranch call. She also gives medications as needed at no extra charge to the owner.
A Boarding Stable that Goes the Extra Mile

When asked what makes her boarding stable stand apart from others in the Sacramento area, Dixon will tell you that it is the personalized care. However, she also offers other services that are not found at the typical boarding facility.

“I do mainly retirement horses, but would also love to do weanling/yearling turn-out/grow up time,” she says. “Additionally, the board you come in at, thought it seem high, is the same board you have for as long as you board with me. In these times of rising expenses, one thing should remain constant.”
She goes on to say, “I do allow stallion boarding and will stand a stallion. But as I'm not really equipped for standing the stallion, I do require use of vet services, so there are charges for that, in addition to day-fees for mare care and handling.”
