It’s Halloween, which means that fans from ages 13-65 will be lined up at midnight at theaters around the country to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show, featuring everyone’s favorite “transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania” — Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
Crafted for stage and screen by popular actor Tim Curry in a time of glam rock and sexual rebellion that was, in some ways, far less conservative than today, the character of Frank-N-Furter is really too far out to be offensive — at least to me — regardless of his personification of about a gazillion trans stereotypes.
This was, after all, the ’70s, and we were all doing our best to be funky and fantastic, given the hideous clothing choices that the fashion industry was offering up.
The whole show is one big sexual mishmash, anyway, and it’s a lot of fun, so practice up on the Time Warp (“But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane”), perfect your costume, and find a theater near you. That shouldn’t be too difficult on October 31.
