D.C. hotels offer unique volunteer package

The Savoy Suites Hotel
President Barack Obama is encouraging all Americans to serve their country with his United We Serve program, a federal challenge to increase volunteerism.
Two leading hotels in Washington, D.C., have one-upped the president by introducing an innovative promotion that combines service with saving money. Sort of a “give and get” kind of deal in which everybody comes out a winner.
Starting July 1 and running through Sept. 7, The Savoy Suites Hotel and The Carlyle Suites Hotel are offering their “Serve America & Stay in D.C.” package, which gives guests a big discount on their room rate if they volunteer their time back home. For every five hours of community service performed by a guest for a legitimate charitable organization, the hotels will refund 50 percent of their room bill per night (excluding taxes).
The service must be performed within 90 days before arrival or 90 days after departure from the Savoy or Carlyle, two of our capital's most prestigious hotels.
“The hours of community service donated benefit the hometowns of each of our guests, and defray the cost of their vacation,” Richard Spigler, president of The Carlyle & Savoy Suites Hotels, said in a statement. “We’re hopeful that this program will give families who may not have been able to afford a vacation this summer, the opportunity to take an awesome trip to our nation’s capital.
“This program allows us to recognize and thank our guests for the contributions they make to their communities back home. … Not only can community service defray the cost of your stay, but most every attraction in the city is free, making D.C. the best destination value in our country this summer.”
Even if you don't have the time to volunteer but want to contribute in some way, the Savoy and Carlyle give you the option of donating 50 percent your room bill to a community service organization of your choice.
There are certain restrictions, of course, and you'll have to provide proof of your community service. But it's a generous, innovative program that's well worth any adventurer's consideration.
