When I was a boy, I was The Terminator of shoes – not only did I destroy them, but I did so with great gusto.

In my defense, I never acted with any real malice. I just happened to be a kid who was very tough on footwear, trying to stay one step ahead of my three brothers or the neighborhood guys I lined up against when we played baseball or football or basketball.

Still, I can't help but feel for my poor father, who had to fork out his hard-earned money to keep his youngest son shod. But he might be happy to know that I have finally met my sole mate(s).

Wenger Footwear designs its collections to stand up to the harshest punishment any outdoors enthusiast can dish out, and still look great. Slip on a pair from Wenger's Alps line (as I have), and you're set to tackle any terrain that doesn't require an oxygen tank or the four legs of a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

My Interlakens have been punished and punished by the very worst that North Texas has to offer, yet my feet have remained blissfully oblivious to the rigors beneath them, pampered by Wenger's dedication to precision engineering aimed at delivering maximum performance, comfort and protection.

Frankly, the only problem I have is in deciding which pair to wear during my travels: The Interlakens or the Monchs. Both are rugged and durable, with an aura that fairly screams at me, “Go ahead, big boy, give it your best shot. You'll wear out long before we do.”

(It's probably not a great sign when you start hearing voices from your shoes, but that's the sort of relationship that can develop with Wenger Footwear.)

I'm headed to Switzerland with my family in March, so I may have to flip a coin to see which pair makes the trip in my carry-on bag. But at least I know I can't go wrong.

For those times when the setting is a bit more relaxed and a lot less sweaty, Wenger has its Chocolate line.

Chocolates are Wenger's “outdoor lifestyle” brand (the Alps line gets the “technically rigorous athletic shoes and boots” tag), which boils down to this: A bit less rugged in appearance, but still engineered to the highest standards.

Think of an afternoon spent inside a mountain chalet, or walking a picturesque Alpine path on the way to a charming Swiss restaurant for a savory meal and an unforgettable bottle of wine, and that's the Chocolate line.

I mean, Wenger describes its Dood shoe as “Dedicated to Nothing, Perhaps the Laziest Shoe Outside of Southern California, Anti-gravity Minus the Jet Pack, Rustic, Slack-Jawed for Slow-Tech Comfort, Yes We're Open.” And it refers to its Refugio model as “Self Burrowing Handcrafted Slippers for an Instinctive Cocoon Strategy, Rugged, Bold Construction for After-the-Trail Power Lounging or a Higher Education.”

After-the-trail power lounging? Slack-jawed for slow-tech comfort? Those are shoes that say, “Yes, I'd absolutely love another glass of wine, thank you. And where's the dessert cart?”

(Again with the talking shoes …)

But you get the idea. Wenger Footwear offers the best of both worlds for any adventurer. Sole food, if you will. One pair to challenge yourself cardiovascularly, and another pair to swaddle you in comfort after your well-deserved shower.

Then again, Christmas is coming, so there's no reason to limit yourself. With more than 30 styles to choose from, now's the perfect time to discover how Wenger Footwear creates “purpose-built tools for your feet.”
