Four-star Roman luxury

Veni, vidi, vici. With apologies to Julius Caesar, we came, we saw and we conquered Rome.

For nearly a week we crisscrossed the city on foot, immersing ourselves in history and a foreign culture -- fueled by twice-daily infusions of gelato.

The Colosseum. Trevi Fountain (twice). Palatine Hill. The Forum. St. Peter's. The Vatican. The Sistine Chapel. We even filched a few umbrella bags from the opera house as souvenirs.

We survived, thanks to the Hotel Mediterraneo (www.romehotelmediterraneo.it).

The Hotel Mediterraneo was our refuge when the spirit was willing but the flesh was weak. Tired feet. Empty stomachs. Sore muscles. The hotel was a panacea, adorned in four-star luxury.

Situated on the highest of Rome's seven hills, the hotel is just two blocks from the city's main railway terminal. It's also within walking distance of most of the historic sites, as well as fantastic shopping and dining.

With 254 rooms and seven luxury suites, the Mediterraneo is large enough to pamper the most discriminating guests, yet still retain an intimate atmosphere. From check-in to departure, the staff was unfailingly courteous and helpful, and always ready to offer a warm smile and a genuine "Bonjourno!"

Caesar knew that an army travels on its stomach, and we were no different. With all that walking every day, we needed calories. We got them in the Mediterraneo's spacious Breakfast Room, which serves a complimentary meal every morning under the watchful eyes of Tritons and mermaids, who cavort in the light of two stunning chandeliers. How good was the food? Good enough to lure a family notorious for sleeping late to stumble out of bed each day at 6:30 a.m. to ensure that we wouldn't miss out on the chef's specialties. The pastries alone were well worth the sleep deprivation.

The Mediterraneo is an Art Deco lover's fantasy come true, with a grand marble staircase, an alabaster bar and an elegant working fireplace in the lobby accented by Prometheus. Ristorante 21 is a foodie's delight, and the Rooftop Garden Bar offers the perfect location to savor a vintage wine while enjoying a breathtaking panoramic view of the Eternal City.

But don't take my word for it. Instead, consider the unbiased review of my 9-year-old daughter Morgan, who said this to me one night as I was tucking her into her hotel bed: "Daddy, can we stay here forever?"

Now that's a recommendation.
