Boston Breakfast: fistful of bacon
Have you ever ordered a breakfast that came with bacon, only to end up searching under your hashbrowns for a pitiful little shriveled up thing? Or even worse—you end a perfect early morning meal wishing your side of bacon could have come with just one more strip.
What you need, my friend, is a bacon buffet, and the
Greenhouse Cafe delivers.
The Greenhouse is a bit of a hidden gem in Cambridge, as it's housed away from the hustle and bustle of Harvard Square within Harvard's science center. While it's true that students can use board plus to purchase items from any of the various stations, including a coffee bar serving Starbucks blends and a parlor selling pizza by the slice or the pie, regular old non-university affiliates can stroll right in and pay with cash. (Or credit, which is a fairly recent addition.)
The shining beacon of hope in the Greenhouse, however, isn't the bubble tea selection or the garlic knots dripping with olive oil. No, the real jewel is the breakfast buffet.
At 42 cents an ounce, you can pile your plate high with potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausage, and, yes, strip after strip of glistening bacon without breaking the bank. Most days I can toss in a seltzer or a freshly squeezed orange juice and still come out under four dollars.
Not satisfied? You can also grab a breakfast sandwich (ingredients like egg, cheese and sausage on a bagel, croissant, biscuit or English muffin) at two for three dollars, or ask for a custom breakfast order from the grill.
For more info: Greenhouse Cafe hours vary with the University schedule. Call 617.496.4790 for more information. Current students may make purchases tax-free; current staff and affiliates may receive a discount. For more on breakfast in Cambridge, why not check out the Boston Bakeries Examiner?
