British rock trio, Band of Skulls, will be performing live at Café Du Nord in San Francisco on July 26th. The band, featuring Russell Marsden (guitar & vocals), Emma Richardson (bass & vocals) & Matt Hayward (drums), released it’s first studio album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey earlier this year and subsequently caught the attention of iTunes.
The hard-hitting song “I Know What I Am” garnered Band of Skulls the coveted iTunes Single of the Week campaign.
Complemented by both male and female lead vocals, the gritty guitar and solid beats take center stage for most part and with this formula, the band manages to transcend generations of music from 70s blues-rock, to 80s pop-rock and 90s garage-rock.
Channeling vibes from rock-trios past, Band of Skulls combines piercing guitar riffs with melancholy melodies whilst Richardson’s tortured yet heartfelt lyrics in songs such as “Honest” and “Dull Gold Heart” reminisce a young Chrissie Hynde.
“We’ve never really fit the mold to how bands usually work. We’re not a sort of fad band: we’re not of the scene of the moment I suppose. There’s nothing wrong with good classic rock. As long as there are other elements that people see in the record,” she said during a recent interview in Toronto.
Baby Darling Doll Face Honey was produced, recorded and mixed by Ian Davenport (Supergrass, Badly Drawn Boy), recorded at Radiohead's Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire and mixed at the House of Blues studio in Los Angeles.
