Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Arthur Russell created music that spanned numerous styles and won the love of artistic communities across the globe.
Following the October 28 release of Russell’s latest album, Love is Overtaking Me, Matt Wolf’s new film, Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell will open in San Francisco on November 7 at The Roxie Theatre.
Critically acclaimed in both New York and London, Wild Combination delves into Russell’s fascinating life – his experience of being gay, confronting AIDS, making art and pursuing popular success in 1970’s and 80’s New York City.
“This tender, fascinating documentary…will delight the cult and instantly convert new members...It’s impossible to hear [Russell’s] strange, soulful music without wanting to hear more, immediately, preferably on high-end headphones somewhere glamorously desolate: the rim of a volcano, a moldy loft in Bushwick, Brooklyn; sand dunes in December.” —The New York Times
With commentary by Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Glass and Jens Lekman among others, Wild Combination will also be released on November 18 on DVD.
