Can you name the dim sum on the girl's bag?

Look and Find is very similar to I Spy. Usually in I Spy someone is already thinking of something and everyone else tries to figure out what it is. In Look and Find, students are taught certain vocabulary words and they have to find it from the picture.

One group of teachers in the StarTalk Program taught a lesson on Dim Sum. Dim Sum originated in Canton, and are small dishes of food. They are usually eaten with tea in a Chinese tradition called “yum cha”. After learning the names of the different dishes of dim sum, students were expected to search through the pictures and find the dim sum. Then using the sentence structure provided, students had to say what dim sum they found.

What dim sum do you see here?

If you think back to any language class, teachers normally would show a flashcard and students would say what they saw. So, why is this method any better?

The answer is that it is more interesting. There is no challenge to look at a flashcard and identify the object. But what if the object were hidden? Would you be able to find the object and name it?
.

Can you find the dim sum?

There should still be a word wall with the pictures and Chinese characters posted for those who still need assistance. And a sentence structure should also be posted to help students still struggling with the language.

Now look through these pictures and see if you can find and name the dim sum. The last picture has two.  Don’t you find them more interesting than plain old flashcards?
