This week, the School Library Journal posted a second list of comic books for summer reading. The sequel article continues from the initial “Good Comics for Kids Summer 2009 Reading List”. “GC4K” was posted in mid-June and covered age categories that began from four to eight with a continuance into the teens. The author, Katherine Dacey, and her colleagues sifted through comic series to compile a list that “includes a variety of titles, from action-oriented manga to comic strip anthologies to graphic novels for beginning readers.”

Katherine Dacey quickly followed up with “GC4K: Comics that Celebrate America’s Cultural Diversity”. Not to be misunderstood, Dacey’s initial article includes a selection of comic books with some diversity of central characters. The sequel article, however, remains true to the title presenting a wide swathe of diverse characters, places and backgrounds. Age categories given for July’s “GC4K” begin at the pre-teens and continue through to the late teens. Following similar scrutiny from June, quality comics and graphic novels make up the summary of recommendations. An example of the listed summer reading is the graphic novel American Born Chinese, which won the Michael L. Printz Award in 2007.

A few of the comic books and graphic novels recommended for teens can also deliver compelling reads for parents as well. Incognegro received commendable reviews from various critics that includes mystery author Walter Mosley (“Devil in a Blue Dress”, “47”) and Publisher’s Weekly.

The suggested reads from "GC4K: Comics that Celebrate America's Cultural Diversity" are available in local comic book stores, book stores or can be ordered online.
