Karen Cator has been named the new director of education technology at the U.S. Department of Education. Cator will fill the role of former director, Tim Magner, who was appointed in 2006.

Cator has a long history in education. A former teacher and technology director from Alaska, Cator has been seen as an innovator in 21st century education. She advocates the use of Web 2.0 tools and other digital resources in the classroom. Cator has served as director of education leadership at Apple since 2001.

The official announcement was made at the Leadership Summit and Ed Forum in Washington, D.C.
