Today is a very somber day in the history of the United States of America. It is of course the 8th Anniversary of the attack by terrorist on the World Trade Center & the Pentagon. Thousands of lives were lost and we should never forget all of the braves hero’s that gave their lives trying to save others.
So in honor of New York, and all that this tragedy affected, I am saying that we should all raise a toast with a Manhattan Cocktail.
To help lighten the moment just a little, here is the origin & history of this cocktail. In most circles it is not nearly as disputed as so many others you will hear of. It was most surely born at the New York Manhattan Club. The two earliest versions both place its origin there.
The earliest is that Jenny Jerome was celebrating the election of Samuel J. Tilden to the Governors office in 1874 at the Manhattan Club. She asked the bartender to create a cocktail to celebrate Tilden’s victory. So hence, the Manhattan was born.
Oh by the way Jenny Jerome was later to become Lady Randolph Churchill, yes Winston’s mother.
The time line is where it gets complicated because it is said that celebration was two years later when Tilden was elected President of the United States. He won the popular vote but it was overturned by the Electoral College.
Last but not least is that supposedly Charles Truax asked the bartender at the Manhattan Club to create him a new cocktail, because his doctor told him to “Lay off Martinis” to loose weight.

The Classic Manhattan
2 oz of Rye or Whiskey
1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth
1 to dashes Angostura Bitters
Shake with Cracked Ice and Strain into a Chilled Cocktail Glass
So to honor the victims and help relieve some of the pain, let us drink a toast with a Manhattan.
May we never forget!
