Tinay Fey and Amy Poehler as Sarah Palin and Hillary
Clinton on Saturday Night Live

Political Junkie?  You've got a chance to revisit that first high tomorrow night.  Vanity Fair and the Folger Shakespeare Library are hosting a panel this Tuesday (Nov. 18) discussing what has been the most extensive, ongoing, in-depth, and relentlessly covered event in America since the O.J. Simpson trial back in the 90s.  The panel, called "Truth, Lies, and Videotape" and consisting of Dan Bartlett of CBS, Andrea Mitchell of NBC, Frank Rich of the New York Times, and Vanity Fair's Todd Purdum, has a lot of ground to cover.  The event starts at 6 p.m. with cocktails.  Tickets are $25 at www.vanityfair.com (scroll down way towards the bottom, there's an ad for it on the right hand side).

This election feels like it began during the 2000 Florida recounts, when a court decision and a loss in the popular vote had people questioning George W. Bush's legitimacy from the get-go, and leaving many excited about the end of his term.  When that chance first came in 2004, the convention nominating John Kerry introduced America to an Illinois State Senator, running for the US Senate, who called himself "A skinny kid with a funny name."  Everyone I know who was there said "Barack Obama will be the next President".

For the first time in a long time, both party nominations were wide-open.  Would it be this Obama, Hillary Clinton, or John Edwards?  Will Al Gore make a surprise run?  What about the Republicans?  Mitt the Mormon?  Chuck Norris' pick Huckabee?  Rudy?  McCain?  Ron Paul?  Two firey races made people passionate about the Presidency long before November, and tired of it before Super Tuesday (why won't Hillary just quit?!).  But then came the Convention - Hillary's great speech, Bill's great speech Joe Biden's great speech, Obama's stunning excercise in oration before the Broncos faithful.  And the Republican Convention (Who is Sarah Palin?  Woah!  Sarah Palin is awesome!), the resurgence of SNL (Tina Fey and Will Ferrel are back?), the over-confidence of SNL (Live From New York, it's Saturday Night!  On a Thursday...?) and Katie Couric's hard-hitting journalism causing Sarah Palin to crumble.  Needless to say, there's plenty to discuss.

The event begins with 6 p.m. cocktails and the unveiling of the "Breaking News:  Renaissance Journalism and the Birth of the Newspaper" at the Folger Library, with the panel to follow.
