Cooking enthusiasts usually have a list of pantry staples, ingredients they always have on hand. In the summer, ice cream makes my list. And if it’s coffee ice cream, well…let’s just say the pints don’t last too long at my house. Recently, one pint disappeared so quickly I seriously wondered if the grocery store bagger forgot to give it to me.
Starbucks offers four flavors: Caramel Macchiato, Mocha Frappucino, Java Chip Frappuccino, and Coffee. My least favorite of the four was Caramel Macchiato. The caramel swirls overpowered the coffee flavor. The plain Coffee ice cream was first runner-up to, my favorite, the Java Chip Frappuccino. This strong coffee, chocolate chunk ice cream is better than the actual frappuccino that inspired it.
The slick website they’ve dedicated to their ice cream line-up is comprehensive, easy to navigate, and even evil. When you roll your mouse over a flavor on the home page, the lid pops off, a scoop appears, and the ice cream slides toward you in such a way that your mouth might water in anticipation. There are delicious recipes. The Tiramisu Ice Cream Parfait looks especially promising. And if you enter your zip code, it’ll tell you where you can buy it.
At Vons, my market of choice, they sell it for $4.50 a pint, but it’s often on sale—2 pints for $7. If you print out a coupon from Starbucks, you can get an additional dollar off.
But what’s better than a pint for $2.50 is a pint for free! Facebook users can log in and vie for one of 20,000 free pints given away every day until midnight on July 19, 2009. Because Facebook is a social network, the idea is to share the ice cream with a friend, but you can keep the coupon for yourself.
Good luck!
Update 7/7/09, 1:02 p.m.: I just succeeded in sending a free pint to a very good friend! So the odds are not impossible. I left the window open and set a timer to go off shortly before the top of the hour. Maybe that will work for you, too.
