The Warehouse in Marina Del Rey is a deceptively upscale restaurant and bar located right on the water’s edge. The exterior design resembles a large dive bar or party place, but the mandatory valet parking and meticulous landscape in front hint at the ambience inside. Though the fishnets, buoys, and ropes adorning the place are a little on the nose, the vibe still manages to feel somewhat classy. Perhaps that was because the clientele consisted mainly of well dressed families and white-haired couples. Not exactly a thriving singles scene.

Appetizers are the only food options at the bar, and although they’re more expensive than your standard bar fare they’re also higher quality. A sampler of four appetizers was tasty and filling, but also costly at 27 dollars. Because of the ocean side location, its logical to stick with the pricier seafood options.

As for the alcohol, there are a handful of beers on tap and a healthy number of signature cocktails, but wine seems to be the main focus here (it is, after all, a seafood bar), but overall the drink menu is simply average.  Though the bar area is takes up a significant portion of the floor plan, the Warehouse is first and foremost a restaurant. Even at the bar, you’re expected to sit at a table and be waited on. The service was painfully slow at times, even with few customers. The wait staff seemed more interested in watching baseball than serving, which was somewhat of a disappointment. The pacing is fine for someone with no agenda, but if you’ve got plans later, try somewhere else.

The Warehouse offers beautiful views of the marina, and is mere feet from the yacht slips. While the bar is fine, it functions more as a holding pen for wait-listed diners than a stand-alone drinking venue. But fortunately, the food was better (albeit pricier) than your normal bar grub. Visit it for a somewhat upscale dinner and the lovely view, but don’t make the same mistake I did and make the trip merely for the bar.
