Gyu Kaku Happy HourGyu-Kaku in Sherman Oaks has one of the best happy hours in the Los Angeles region. Between 5-6:30p.m. and 9:30-11p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 12-6:30p.m. and 10 p.m. - last call on Friday and Saturday, this Japanese bar and grill offers a whole array of discounted items. Draft beer costs a measly 99¢, cold sake shots are $2, select cocktails run $3, large hot sakes go for $5, and bar food is half off the already low prices. However, unless you’re starving and looking for a cheap eat, you might want to just stick with drinking, as the food is pretty forgettable. Luckily the potables escape this mediocrity. The cocktails are surprisingly tasty and potent. Kirin and Sapporo are the only options on tap, but both are solid beers.

Though the drink prices are phenomenal and the food is average at best, this place strangely seems more focused on its restaurant endeavors . The bar takes up only a very small portion of the venue, and seating is minimal. The bar is aligned just a few short feet from the dining area, so there is no standing room either. If you attend during peak hours, be prepared to rub shoulders with strangers, or be forced to linger by the coat rack. Another downside is the parking. This particular Gyu-Kaku is located in a packed strip mall with extremely limited parking. Valeting is often the only option, so always arrive with cash on hand, just in case.

In terms of food, layout and style, Gyu-Kaku is a pedestrian excuse for a Japanese bar and grill, with miserable parking to boot. But with unbelievably long and well priced happy hours more than make up for these shortcomings. The number of decent places in Los Angeles where you can get a good beer for less than a buck can probably be counted on one hand. Although it’s likely to be packed on the weekends, the specials bring in a colorful and diverse crowd that’s sure to keep you entertained. Gyu-Kaku is a chain, with seven other locations in southern California. The happy hour rates vary between each location, so research beforehand if you want to know your closest one’s specials. Make sure to avoid Gyu-Kaku during normal hours, but for happy hour, the place is a winner.
