Jason Mraz, Daughtry, Gavin DeGraw, Bon Jovi, and Tom Jones attend Songwriter's Hall of Fame Gala
The 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards 40th Anniversary gala was held on Thursday, June 18 at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.
Inductees at this year’s event included Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora; Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati (The Young Rascals); and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Crosby, Stills & Nash were presented their induction award by James Taylor who performed a classic CSN medley which included “Love The One You’re With,” “Long Time Gone” and “Teach Your Children.”
Rob Thomas presented The Hal David Starlight Award to Jason Mraz. This award has been given to many gifted young songwriters in the past including Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend and John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls. "I hate this guy,” Thomas joked. “He’s too damn good. We need him to step back from the curb so we can all look better.” Jason then sang his hit “I’m Yours” to a very enthusiastic crowd.
The Johnny Mercer Award was presented to the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. The Towering Song this year was “Moon River” and the Towering Performance Award was presented to Andy Williams. Sir Tom Jones received the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award.
Other attendees included Clint Black, Kara DioGuardi, Gavin DeGraw, and Berry Gordy. In tribute to Bon Jovi, Chris Daughtry performed his own rendition of “I’ll Be There For You,” which was then followed by a performance of their mega hit “Wanted” by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
Several stars donated items to be auctioned off at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Silent Auction. Jason Mraz donated a backstage meet and greet at his August 7 concert at Nikon Jones Beach Theatre. There's still time to put your bid in since the auction doesn't close until June 30.
