Pins of Light are not out to reinvent any genres or redefine music. What they do is simply rock, and they do it with an unpretentious abandon that's hard to find these days. The songs are fast and dirty and simple at the core, leaving the guitarists plenty of room for careening solos. It's raw and abrasive in a way that can't be entirely attributed to the Garage Band recording. Every track roars like a gale wind, driven by pounding, manic drums and punctured by reverb-drenched vocals. Just when the constant forward charge threatens to get overwhelming, the album briefly slows down with "1000 Years," which lets listeners catch their breath before the squalling, epic (by this album's standards) "Pins of Light." If there's one complaint, it's that the bass gets a little lost in the mix, though it's hard to criticize a demo for something like that.
The demo is available for free download here. Pins of Light will be recording a studio version in November and playing an early show at Hemlock Tavern with Libyans on Monday, August 24th.
