Unfortunately there’s word today that the 69-year-old hiker who was reported missing last week in the Grand Canyon has been found deceased. Robert A. Williams was reported overdue after a Memorial Day hike in the canyon, and his car was found on the South Rim the next day. After searching fruitlessly for several days rangers resorted to using spotting scopes to scan locations where Mr. Williams might have fallen. Today they located his body 200 feet below the Hermit Trail and recovered it by helicopter.
A month before Mr. Williams's disappearance, three young men drowned in the canyon after attempting to swim across the Colorado River, which was about 50 degrees at the time.
Accidents happen and you shouldn’t let them dissuade you from heading out into the great wide open--after all, adventure is what happens when things don’t go the way you planned--but as we head into Great Outdoors Month keep in mind that one of the trade-offs for the freedom of the outdoors is increased responsibility for your own well-being. Be prepared and stay safe.
