Ratings for Jon and Kate Plus 8 continued their return to normal Monday. Episode 5 of the show that aired June 15, 2009, had 2.9 million viewers, well off the almost 10 million mark for the season premiere.
However, that's still a big audience for a cable television show, and is actually the average number of watchers that the Season 4 episodes had. The fact that the episode was just a rehash of Jon and Kate's appearance on American Chopper probably didn't help, either.
So will TLC be content with these ratings? The answer is "no" if the promos for the big Jon and Kate announcement are the ratings ploy many believe they are -- the network is replacing the regularly scheduled episode with a special that will announce developments that will have "an affect on every member of the family." If it turns out to reveal something that most knew (or could guess) already, then we'll know that TLC is simply chasing after the ratings magic from earlier episodes. And who can blame them? It's what television networks do -- Jon and Kate should be the ones embarrassed for playing along and duping their fans.
