Naturopathic Physicians currently can prescribe naturally derived medications. SB 327, a bill that has recently passed in the Oregon Senate, is an effort to modernize the Naturopathic physicians prescription making authority. It will be coming before the Oregon House of Representatives soon. This bill will would grant naturopathic physicians the right to prescribe all medications appropriate in a primary health care setting.
According to the American Association Naturopathic physicians, “Naturopathic physicians combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science. Steeped in traditional healing methods, principles and practices, naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. By using protocols that minimize the risk of harm, naturopathic physicians help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health. It is the naturopathic physician’s role to identify and remove barriers to good health by helping to create a healing internal and external environment.”
A representative at Nature Cures Clinic in downtown Portland stated, “In the naturopathic setting, supportive and non-suppressive therapies are always favored over pharmaceuticals. However, there are circumstances in which a medication is the most appropriate therapy to use, at least temporarily.” They are primary care physicians. This bill would give them the same tools to use in their practice. By providing naturopathic physicians the authority to prescribe it can also save their patients money from having to go to an MD to get their prescriptions. As that requires double the visits and double the costs.
