The economy has wrecked havoc on all our lives, but you can find a grain of good news in all the chaos and share it with your grandkids. You can help them get rid of the “gotta haves” and appreciate the simple things in life.

Mia loves her very own book bag.

First of all, take some trips together to the library! Oh what wonders await you there! Getting that first library card, a rite of passage available to even the youngest in your family, will open doors to adventures and activities to brighten any day. If there is a special occasion coming up make those treks extra special by purchasing a reusable, personalized, hand-painted book bag from BabyBookBag.etsy.com to carry all the special stories home for an afternoon of cuddling and reading.

Are you sometimes astonished at how many toys, video games and sports equipment one child can collect? Wouldn’t it be great if they could appreciate making do with less buying? Of course, there are times you want to spoil them, but times you simply can’t afford another toy. Instead, help organize a toy trading party. Have your grandchild make two lists: friends to invite and books or toys to trade. Next send out some evites or make a few phone calls asking each friend to bring 3-5 items they would be willing to exchange. Bake some cookies, make some lemonade and set up a few tables. As each child arrives hand out tickets color coded by approximate value and stick a corresponding colored sticker on the item: red for $1 to $5, blue for $6 to $10 and so on. Each child can then spend their tickets on items that match the color of their ticket. Everyone leaves with something new to play with and nobody’s pocket is emptied out! Don’t forget to recycle some grocery bags to carry the loot home.

Last but not least, sit down with your grandchild and the new library book or traded-for treasure and spend some time together. Nothing is more valuable than the hours you spend on your grandkid.
