Happiness is bouncing at the park

What is more perfect than a summer day in the park with a grandchild? There is no more simple, pure fun than swinging, sliding and climbing unless it is kicking a ball across a wide expanse of grass. The new North Domingo Baca Park at Wyoming and Corona (North of Paseo del Norte) is opening soon and is the perfect place for a park date. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 22 at 2 pm.

I got a preview recently and spent a very relaxing morning there with Katie who is two. She was completely enchanted with the new playground especially designed for little ones, but this park has something for everyone. A second set of equipment has more challenging play opportunities for older kids. And, if your grandchild is a teen, they may love the new skate-park. Hmmmm, who are we leaving out, the granddog? Not to worry, there is a lovely dog park with shade and benches.

You will also find a great covered area complete with picnic tables for the lemonade, sandwiches and cookies you surely won’t forget. Or, pack a blanket and you can picnic out on the beautiful, soft grass. Katie and I brought along a princess ball (you know, a standard ball covered with Cinderella, Snow White and other royalty) and had great fun playing catch. Actually it was more like fetch since neither of us is going to make the Isotopes roster.

Just in case you haven’t been on a park outing lately, here is a must bring checklist:
sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, and wipes for messy fingers are a good idea. A couple of bottles of water come in handy if you are running after kids and dogs. Snacks like granola bars, grapes, juice boxes, and individual cookie packs are fun. You’ll need your keys, cell phone, and maybe even a tiny first aid kit in case someone gets a scratched up knee.

Future plans for this new northeast Albuquerque park area include a library and a community center. If you live in another part of town, check out the parks near you at the city web site. Now, slather on the sunscreen, load the car, grab the grandkid and have a lovely day!
