First they cracked open the Best Picture race. Now the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is trying to capture the youth market via votes by allowing more younger, popular actors into the club.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, actors such as Michael Cera and Seth Rogen were invited to join the Academy this year, along with Tyler Perry, Hugh Jackman and former nominee Michelle Williams, among others.
Is the Academy on to something here or is this the equivalent of People Magazine catering to teens? What kind of an impact will allowing Judd Apatow favorites like Paul Rudd and Jane Lynch join mean for nominees? Can we expect Funny People to make this year’s Best Picture cut as a result?
It’s obvious the Academy is aiming for relevance and bigger viewing numbers at this point, but the question remains whether or not this is the best way to do that. Of course I don’t have that answer, but I will say that it’s nice to see the Academy making an effort to shake up what has long appeared to be an old-timers club, based on past nominations. I’m not saying this should open a door for Terminator Salvation, but with a wider Best Picture category, it would be nice to see a summer contender like Star Trek or Disney Pixar's Up make that cut. On the flip side to that, let’s hope the Academy’s attempts don’t end up watering down the Oscar talent pool in order to capture the 18-49 year-old audience. There’s got to be a fair balance and it’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
I’m just hoping we won’t be looking at a best director nomination for Michael Bay or anything.
What do you think? Is the Academy’s latest move win or lose?
