Maybe you have come to the conclusion that Halloween is just another amateur night and it is best to
party at home, or you think that it is one of the best nights to get stabbed up and robbed in San Francisco. Either conclusion is absolutely correct, but the threat of being barfed on and/or being held up at gunpoint by thugs that are free to roam around in disguise is no reason to stay home on an otherwise perfectly good party night. As long your plans don’t involve taking a cab or public transportation, eating out, going to a bar, not being harassed by morons, walking through your own neighborhood, or waking up in familiar surroundings, there are a few cool things for grown-ups that hate techno music to do on hell-o-ween. HALLOWEEN NIGHT
What & Where: The Zombie Prom at The Verdi Club. 2424 Mariposa St @ Potrero
The lowdown: The Hi Rhythm Hustlers plus special guest Cari Lee play music from the golden age of entertainment, when crazy kids danced: strolled, twisted and bopped the night away to bands such as Bill Haley's Comets... Slappin' upright bass, honking saxophone and swinging guitar for all-ages. (Ugh, yea. All ages.) Costume contest, thriller at midnight, and zombie floorshow. Doors at 9 p.m., live music starts at 10 p.m. Presale tix $11, $15 at the door. 21+ only. More info: http://www.oldtimey.net/halloween.html
What and Where: Teenage Dance Craze Monster Twisting Party at The Knockout Mission St @ Valencia
The Lowdown: The flyer does not say much about this one, but despite the name, it’s 21+ and there will be no teenagers in the bar. Admission is free, there is going to be some DJs and the flyer says something about Danzig, so hopefully the music won’t suck too bad.
What and Where: Some bands at Thee Parkside. 17th @ Wisconsin
The Lowdown: Thee Parkside usually is not lame and I know there will be no techno-crap being played there on Halloween, so it should be a safe bet. There is no particular Halloween theme, which should be a relief to people that are sick of that crap. $10 at the door, 21+ only.
What and Where: Hulaween at Forbidden Island. 1304 Lincoln Ave., Alameda
The Lowdown: Drink some haunted "spirits", see scary movies projected against the wall, drink spooky cocktail specials and hear live Theremin from Robert Silverman and spookabilly shock’n’roll music from DJ Fitz of Firetiki. Also, there will be a costume contest with some awesome prizes!! Update: The Bay Bridge fell apart, so good luck getting there if you don't live in the East Bay.
What and Where: Road Zombies Halloween Bash at the 23 Club. 23 Visitacion Ave., Brisbane
The Lowdown: Featuring the return of The Haywoods, The Royal Deuces and the Hi-Rhythym Hustlers. Doors at 8 p.m., bands at 9. $10 at the door/$5 with car club jacket. WARNING: Cabs from SF WILL NOT pick you up in Brisbane and cabbies in Brisbane may never show up/refuse to take you into The City, so come with a ride. I almost got stuck at this damn place once, so trust me on this one.
