Though it's the nature of yoga studios to be warm and welcoming places, they can still be intimidating to the uninitiated. Maybe you're curious about yoga but don’t know what to make of the foreign terminology and the crazy-sounding class names. Maybe you're interested in yoga’s many health benefits but would like to practice in a more familiar setting. Or maybe you're finding studio fees to be prohibitive in a down economy.
You may be surprised to learn that Overland Park has some excellent — and surprisingly affordable — yoga options for the studio-shy. Located on 151st Street just east of Metcalf, the Blue Valley Recreation Center offers a full lineup of Hatha Yoga classes suitable for all levels. (The Sanskrit word "hatha" literally means sun/moon, and simply refers to the practice of yoga postures, known as asanas.) Led by instructor Shanna Haun, the Hatha class is offered five times a week and averages a mere $5 per class for OP residents (approximately $6 per class for non-residents).
Registration is required in blocks of 8-12 classes, depending on the season. The spring/summer session begins this week, but some late registrations may still be accepted. Students are allowed to make up missed classes at any of the class times offered during the season. Yoga newcomers will benefit from Shanna's focus on alignment and safety, and learn how to build on basic yoga postures as the session progresses.
For students who are brand-new to yoga are interested in learning the fundamentals of standing, balancing, and seated postures, BVRC offers a one-session Yoga 101 class for $12. The spring/summer class is this Sunday, June 7, from 4:00-5:30 pm. Click here for online registration.
