Kansas City-area yogis who find themselves in recession straits need not give up their OM. As part of its Parks and Recreation program, the City of Fairway, Kansas, offers a variety of affordable wellness classes, including Hatha Flow Yoga.
Led by certified Yoga instructor Sally Johnson, the Hatha Flow class meets every Monday at 6:15 PM for the low cost of $6 per class ($6.625 for non-Fairway residents). The class is structured in eight-week sessions, with the intensity gradually increasing to include head stands and modifications for more advanced participants. Students are encouraged to work at their own level, and Sally’s relaxed teaching style creates a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.
The only arguable drawback may be the lack of ambience: rather than a calming studio scented with incense, the Fairway class meets in an empty room at the city office building. But the somewhat sterile environment is helped by the relaxing music emanating from Sally’s iPod speakers and the wide assortment of yoga props available. And after a few minutes listening to Sally’s expert instruction, you’ll be so focused on your alignment, you’ll hardly notice your surroundings.
Due to the Hatha class’s increasing popularity, the city plans to add a more strenuous Vinyasa class come fall, which will give students the opportunity to take their yoga skills to the next level without feeling the financial strain of a pricey studio membership. To enroll, complete the registration form on the City of Fairway Web site.
