Created in India in 1995, Laughter Yoga is a “wellbeing” workout that has since spawned more than 6,000 laughter clubs worldwide.
Dr. Madan Kataria was writing a book on the healing power of laughter when he decided to try forming a laughter club. He wanted to see if simulated laughter had the same positive effects on the body as genuine laughter – such as boosting the immune system, increasing blood flow to the heart, and relieving stress.
Dr. Kataria and the members of his laughter club soon found that their fake laughter quickly turned into genuine laughter when they came together in the spirit of love and harmony. The concept began spreading, and now there are people running laughter clubs all over the world.
In keeping with Dr. Kataria’s guidelines for laughter clubs, laughter yoga sessions are always offered for free or for a small suggested donation.
