Ghosts, and things that go bump in the Night, have always captured our imagination. Now that we are moving towards Halloween, our focus will be on such things again. Ghosts have really become a "pop culture" item lately. Over the last few years, several ghost hunting shows have made it to the air waves...most notably: Ghost Hunters on the SyFy Channel.
I'm sure we all have a ghost story that we have shared with friends. Personally, my only "encounter" came last year when driving home from work late at night. It was about 1:30AM, and while driving down a side street, I noticed a person sitting in a wheelchair waving to me under a street lamp. They were set back off the road a little in the weeds. I drove past a few hundred feet and stopped....did I really see that? Do they need some help? I put the car in reverse and went back to the spot. When I arrived, there was nobody there! Now, it would have been impossible for that person to wheel away that quickly. Was it real? I don't know...but it sure was weird!
Scientifically, it should really be no big surprise that ghosts exist...I think you can make a compelling argument! E=MC squared is the most famous equation in the world. What Einstein is saying here is that matter and energy are interchangeable. Energy can turn into solid matter, and matter can turn into energy. Now if we fold into the mix the First Law of Thermodynamics....that states energy can never be lost or "used up", it can only change form...then we can get to a reasonable argument for the existence of ghosts. If you make the assumption that your consciousness is a form of energy, then when you die, it likely can only "change form"! Science even gives your consciousness someplace to go. In the world of theoretical physics, M-Theory postulates mathematically that up to 11 different dimensions actually exist. Which one of those your consciousness decides to reside in, is beyond the scope of this column. :)
So....next time you hear a good ghost story, consider the possibility that it could be true!
