Adams Morgan: The sad truth

November 4, 8:30 PM
by Christopher Flamini, D.C. Bars & Clubs Examiner

As one who was once a devout follower of the nightlife scene in Adams Morgan it pains me to say that what was once a hub for variety and entertainment in Washington has plummeted drastically in recent months. Naturally, the question remains, what is it that has caused this downfall? In this writer’s opinion there are numerous factors, the most alarming and worrisome being the drastic rise in crime that has been plaguing the area over the course of the past year.
In recent months, there has been a noticeable spike in both assault and robberies in the area. While the exact cause of this is unknown, aside from stating the obvious. The dismal state of our economy leads in turn to the sheer audacity of these crimes and their abundance.
On the other hand, the problem could lie in the venues themselves. Frankly, a large majority of the bars and clubs available to those heading out in Adams Morgan aren’t particularly good. Some locales even on weekends at peak hours are completely barren. Having just spent last Saturday out on the town in the Adams Morgan area I was quite disappointed to see that some, not all, of the clubs and bars were seriously lacking on customers -- at least in comparison to what I’ve seen in the past.
Despite the fact that there are a seemingly endless amount of establishments to choose from in the area it seems as if everyone actually only goes to five or six leaving much of the area desperate for business.
This obviously leads to yet another problem. Since a majority of those going out on weekends seem to gravitate towards the same haunts this leads to dramatic over-crowding of what are considered to be the best that Adams Morgan has to offer. Bars such as Sake, Grand Central, and Chloe to name a few, become unbearably overcrowded to the point at which it completely takes away from the experience. Although it must be noted that these bars already aren’t particularly good, making the experience exponentially worse. Unless of course you’re completely sloshed, which is the case for many; in that case most couldn’t care less either way.
The fact is that the city’s nightlife has been improving over the course of the past few years. The rise of K Street and much of downtown have brought about a new breed of both clubs and clubbers. Those who in the past were loyal followers of what the Adams Morgan scene had to offer have now diverted to the more sophisticated, new clubs and bars that have sprung up downtown -- and rightfully so.
