Veterans Day is coming up on November 11, 2009 bringing a parade, book signings by author James Lee McDonough, zoo admission and other special opportunities for our Vets to Nashville.
What Is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which signaled the conclusion of World War I. The main hostilities of World War I ended officially at 11th hour of 11th Day of 11th Month of 1918 when the Germans signed the Armistice. Today Veterans Day is both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all 50 states honoring all military men and women.
Nashville Veterans Day Parade
Many towns and cities across America celebrate with a Veterans Day parade, and Nashville counts itself proudly among those cities who honor their vets with an annual parade. The 2009 Veterans Day parade is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, at 11 a.m. on Broadway.
Lipscomb University Presents Author James Lee McDonough
This year Lipscomb University will honor America’s military veterans on November 10 and 11 with a visit by noted military historian and author James Lee McDonough. Lipscomb’s Beaman Library will host a Veterans Day book-signing for the well-known Civil War historian at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 11. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Nashville Christian university is planning several other gatherings for alumni veterans on campus as well as at the Veterans Day Parade in Nashville. Details at www.lipscomb.edu.
Lipscomb University Participates in Veterans Day Parade
Lipscomb University students, alumni and faculty who have served in the military will also march in Nashville’s Veterans’ Day Parade. This marks the first time in recent history that a Nashville university has featured its veterans in the parade, according to parade authorities. Details at www.lipscomb.edu.
First Baptist Church Downtown to Host Dinner & Program for Vets
Also on November 11, First Baptist Church downtown will host a dinner for First Baptist veterans and their spouses, and have an evening program featuring the testimony of Edgar Harrell, a World War II veteran who was assigned to the USS Indianapolis. The Indianapolis transported the internal components of the atomic bombs to the B-29 base in the South Pacific. Details at Veterans Day Program.
Free Concert Taping for "A Pure Country Gift"
If you want something a little more country-Western for Veterans Day, you can attend the free concert taping featuring country artists George Strait and Katrina Elam at the Municipal Auditorium in Downtown Nashville from 10 AM to 4 PM. Free Admission to Nashville Zoo
The Nashville Zoo is offering free admission on Veteran's Day, for active military personnel, military veterans and their families. With proof they are in the military, servicemen and their immediate families can get in for free during the zoo's normal hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitors must show their military ID, veteran organization ID, discharge papers or other official military identification to be given free admission. Veterans Day Blood Drives
The American Red Cross invites you to honor all veterans and active duty military personnel by donating blood. The Red Cross has aided hundreds of thousands of military members throughout history, and remains committed to supporting them. There will be a Veterans Day blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt located at 2200 Children’s Way in Nashville; on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at LP Field located at 404 BNA Drive in Nashville; and on Friday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Affairs Medical Center located at 1310 24th Avenue South in Nashville.
