
Danny Gokey honored at L.A. Dream Center
American Idol’s Danny Gokey has garnered another honor, but this time it was for his late wife, Sophia. This week Gokey performed at the L.A. Dream Center event and joined Dream Center founder, Matthew Barnett, in naming the Youth Outreach Center for his late wife, Sophia. The event was held in celebration of the 15th Anniversary of the L.A. Dream Center and recognized Gokey's commitment to inner-city relief work through the foundation Gokey created in her memory, Sophia’s Heart.
L.A. Dream Center
The L.A. Dream Center, formerly the Queen of Angels Hospital in downtown L.A., began as a home missions project of the Southern California District of the Assemblies of God. It is now an outreach to the 11,000 homeless and needy in L.A. & across the U.S., serving abandoned teens, gang members, and those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.
Danny Gokey Foundation - Sophia’s Heart
The organization, which is supported by Danny Gokey’s foundation Sophia’s Heart, feeds 30,000 people per week which equals one million pounds of food and houses more than 1,200 people every day each week in Los Angeles, with over 130 satellite outreaches across the U.S.
Danny Gokey on American Idol
As reported in Which American Idol alumni have gospel music ties? Danny Gokey started singing gospel music with his family in church and has been the worship director at his church in Milwaukee, Faith Builders International Ministries, for several years. He came to national attention on the eighth season of American Idol where he finished in the top three, competing against fellow gospel artist Kris Allen.
