Presenting the eighth exhibition in the series of the Norma Canelas and William D. Roth Collection, the Orlando Museum of Art [OMA] showcases samples of traditional textile arts that span the African continent.
The cultural examples in this collection include cloth from various traditions, such as the Kente cloth from West Africa, the beaded aprons of the Kirdi in Cameroon, the appliqued and embroidered flags of the Fante in Ghana, and the beaded animal skins of the San people from South Africa.
Whether textiles were meant for aesthetic or functional reasons, these pieces are studied to better understand the people who create them.

Everything from the way these were produced to their designs -color and patterns- and types of material used tell social scientists, anthropologists in particular, a story about the people and their traditions and beliefs.

On the first Wednesday of each month, Jan Clanton is scheduled to offer a gallery talk at 1:30 pm and lasting approximately 30 minutes. Cost: $8 for non-members of OMA.
