This time of year, sugar skulls stare out of the store windows lining the gritty streets in the Mission. But they don't disappear after Día de los Muertos. You can spot sketches of sugar skulls hanging on walls of tattoo shops. Take a closer look at the guy's (or girl's) sleeve next to you and you might notice the hallowed eyes of one of Sylvia Ji's sugar skulls staring back at you from their bicep.
Sylvia Ji has made the sugar skull into a modern sex symbol. Her paintings of beautiful women in sugar skull inspired make up are not only seen on walls but often spotted on biceps and shoulder blades. Ji's sugar skulls are the new pin ups.
Ji was born in San Francisco and attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Keep an eye out for upcoming shows and peep some of her gorgeous paintings here.
Happy Day of the Dead
