Golden Mean: an irrationally perfect café
I am always on the lookout for a cozy café I can order a cup of coffee at and than hunker down and not be tormented with dagger eyes to leave. I prefer an independent café as opposed to one of the chains. I have nothing against the corporate conglomerates except they usually come attached with crowds, noise, and are uninspired.
I have found it hard to locate a truly cozy café on the north side of Santa Monica and I had high hopes for the new vegan café, Golden Mean. I am not vegan but I appreciate fresh, organic food, and the benifits of a vegan diet. During my first visit, I was greeted immediately by Aaron, the owner of the café. He is your typical open-minded, friendly granola guy who had a longtime dream to create a café and community center and saw that dream come to fruition in Golden Mean.
The café is small and the food delicious but be warned, if you love a cup of joe with lots of creamy goodness, you’ll have to get it with a creamy goodness substitute such as, soy or coconut milk. If you get tired of the ergonomic wooden chairs in the café, you can give your bum a break and take your hot or cool beverage up to the reading area and have a seat on one of the plush cushions.
The staff is one of the friendliest I've encountered in all of Santa Monica and they always make me feel welcome. In fact, they seem to make everyone who walks into the café feel welcome. On one of my visits a young couple from Australia stumbled in with only their backpacks on their back. They were in search of a hotel for the night. The staff immediately let them use one of their laptops to find one. It is also not unusual for Aaron or for one of the staff to offer a complimentary cupcake or cup of tea to a loyal customer or even a new customer.
As friendly as Santa Monica can be I still find the friendly attitudes to be somewhat artificial and disingenuous at times. At Golden Mean, they are truly happy you have walked into their café and I know they want to give me the best service they can offer. And I'm more than happy to let them butter me up, even if it is a butter substitute.
