MX GP of Great Britain 09 Live
Reaching the mid season point with the forthcoming duo of Grand Prix’s in Mallory Park and Ernee, the FIM Motocross World Championship continues to deliver a great show.
Entering round seven of 15 in Mallory Park this weekend, MX1 series leader Tony Cairoli sees a strong Barragan in second place while De Dycker, Coppins and Philippaerts complete a hot top five.
In the MX2 class Marvin Musquin now leads the Championship ahead of Paulin. Guarneri continues to be a steady third while Goncalves is working his way up courtesy of back to back podiums.
The FIM Veterans’ World Cup will join the Grand Prix series this weekend for round three of five. Iven currently leads ahead of Nilsson and Puzar.
MX1
Leading the MX1 standings since round three in Istanbul, Turkey, Yamaha Red Bull De Carli’s Tony Cairoli is facing a strong opposition in this hard fought GP campaign. While Cairoli showed good speed, confidence and consistency since Turkey, where the two time MX2 World Champion from Italy collected his first season heat win and overall win, his closest rivals had a hard time to keep up with the 23 year old though Barragan seems the one with the highest chances to slice the gap this weekend.
KTM Silver Action’s Barragan is pumped after becoming the first ever Spanish to win a GP on home soil courtesy of his overall win at Bellpuig two weeks ago. Moreover Barragan won his maiden GP last year at Mallory Park, a venue that he looks forward to as the last free week might have healed his left shoulder injury completely.
Teka Suzuki WMX1’s De Dycker follows Cairoli and Barragan in third but the Belgian left Bellpuig with a wrist injury and will not be in perfect shape for the forthcoming weekend.
Just one point separates the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross team mates Coppins and defending MX1 Champion Philippaerts, fourth and fifth respectively. The latter has made up ground courtesy of an unexpected podium finish in Bellpuig, where the Italian rode with a broken left index due to a contact with countryman Cairoli in Portugal. The gap from Cairoli is 57 points now.
Early Championship leader Tanel Leok sits in sixth ahead of Desalle and Nagl, who both missed out on Bellpuig’s rostrum by just two points.
Being 14th in the standings, Mackenzie of CAS Honda will aim at his first season’s podium in front of the home crowd as the season’s beginning was hampered by a severe tendonitis.
Also the Buildbase CCM Racing and Phoenix Tools CCM Racing squads with Dougan and Church look forward to their home event.
Onboard the factory Husqvarna 450 Matti Seistola will ride the forthcoming Grand Prix in Mallory Park while Martin Honda MX will line up two time World Champion Mickael Pichon replacing injured Strijbos and De Reuver.
MX2
Exploiting a difficult Catalan outing for previous Championship leader Gautier Paulin, NGS’ Marvin Musquin snatched the red plate from his French countryman and now heads the pack into round seven of fifteen at Mallory Park. Though Musquin’s lead is just three points over Paulin and five points over third placed Guarneri.
Bud Racing Kawasaki PSM’s Paulin will try to get back the red plate, which he held from round one in Faenza, though he has an open bill with the British course where he finished a disappointing 18th in 2008.
Guarneri of Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci Motocross still sits in third but Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Goncalves has now become a serious threat. The Portuguese opened up his winning account in Valkenswaard and since then he has been constantly winning one moto per GP and ending the weekend on the podium for three consecutive times. Goncalves is just 13 points away from Guarneri and 18 points from the top of the standings.
Boog rounds off the top five while Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2 team mate Roczen, who debuted in Portugal 11 days after his 15th birthday, has already shown he is capable to win a moto when he fought tooth and nail with Boissiere in heat two at Bellpuig-he finished second in the heat and fourth overall. Now the German young gun is 16th in the standings.
The Catalan round marked the maiden GP win for Van Horebeek and a comeback to the podium for Boissiere as both look confident for the British GP.
Riding for Great Britain based team Utag-Yamaha.com, Turkish GP winner Zach Osborne will try to comeback for his team’s home round after he broke his left wrist in Portugal.
Other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing member Shaun Simpson, now the highest home rider in the rankings, will attend the event but just as a spectator after he broke his left leg in a training accident at the end of April-three days after winning his maiden heat at Valkenswaard. The second best home rider is KTM fellow rider Sword, who was a positive fifth overall last year at Mallory but he is now 17th in the Championship.
VETERANS
With three rounds to go Peter Iven leads the FIM Veterans’ World Cup standings on the way to reconfirm his victory of the 2008 series. Though Iven, who won the opening round in Faenza this year and in Mallory last year, is chased by runner up Mats Nilsson and Alex Puzar with the top three riders being spread in just 22 points.
Nilsson actually took a step forward by winning round two in Valkenswaard while Puzar has not yet won this year. Puzar collected his best season’s finish in Valkenswaard with third overall and is pumped for round three.
Jan Blancquaert, who rounded off last year’s podium behind Iven and Thorpe, and Christophe LherIteau round off the top five while the highest placed home rider is Terry House in 11th.
