You know that old saying, “When in Rome, do as Romans do”? It’s meant to encourage travelers to be both culturally sensitive and open to new experiences. As you transition from a sedentary lifestyle to a healthier one, it may feel like you are venturing into a foreign land. Don’t let this deter you; instead, embrace it. This might mean that you should stop going to the gym in the old run down clothes that you hoarded from high school. Spend some time at the mall and get current with your gym style. Also, maybe now is a good time to swap out your old fridge for a bigger shinier one to store all your fresh fruit and veggies. You may also find it helpful to seek out friends and family who have already embraced healthy living and find out what they think are essential items.
Many musicians would tell you that one of the biggest turn-offs for a beginner is having to learn with a bad instrument. In a similar vein, not having the right gear from the onset can derail your motivation to live better. Just be careful to spend wisely and not get overly-extravagant with your purchases.
Below are three things that I find essential:
Good shoes: you may want to visit a running shoe store for this one. Good shoes can help protect you from injury and make running more engaging. I usually keep one pair for outside and one pair for inside (helps keep the gym clean).
The right apparel: It’s a little awkward when you realize that the guy next to you at the gym has holes in his clothing in all the wrong places. It’s also unsightly when a girl is revealing a tad bit too much (if you’re trying to get attention, you’re probably getting too much of it from the wrong kind of guys). Now this doesn’t mean you’re supposed to go out and spend hundreds on the latest hi-tech fabric. If you’re like me, a nice fitting cotton t-shirt (don’t wear shirts 3 sizes too big or too small) is just fine for most workouts.
Water bottle: This makes you look like a healthy person, and also gives you no excuse to not hydrate during the day. If you want to be more eco-friendly, I highly recommend water bottles from Sigg.
