Eye On Golf didn't get a chance to watch much of the golf from the HSBC Appearance Fee Open this past weekend – too much golf going on here in Arizona with temperatures approaching record levels and global warming threatening to heat up the desert. But what we did watch was amazing. Yes, there was some pretty fantastic golf throughout the four rounds of the tournament, lots of great shots and low scores. But, golf fans expect such performances from these guys. After all, these guys are good.
Unfortunately, the little bit of golf that we did catch on the telly featured about a five minute stretch in which we witnessed the following:
First Philly Mc virtually whiffed a chip trying to hit a flopper on the sixteenth green. He eventually made a par after holing a twenty-footer.
Then The Big Easy rinses his second shot into the par-5 18th while holding a one-stroke lead. Ernie never recovered from that, made a bogey and lost the tournament.
Finally the camera pans back to Tiger on sixteen, the same hole with Phil, and we get to watch el Tigre chunk and dump a pitch into a bunker. By the way, Tiger's bunker shot hit the flagstick and he made the six-footer for par.
And then for an encore Phil and Tiger play the final hole like a couple of fifteen handicappers. Fortunately, Phil didn't get his ball wet and managed to hang on and win.
The moral of the story: never despair, this round of golf is just a moment in time.
