Michael Whan, most recently the president and CEO of Mission Itech Hockey, has been named the next commissioner of the LPGA. The announcement was made on October 28 at Madison Square Garden. Whan will become the eighth commissioner of the 60-year old LPGA. He will assume his duties on January 4th after a transition period with acting commissioner Marsha Evans.
The announcement of Whan took national golf experts by surprise. In all the speculation no one had mentioned him as a possible contender to replace Carolyn Bivens who was deposed in July in the wake of a player revolt.
As virtually all golf fans know the LPGA has been in a downward spiral. The tour had 33 tournaments in 2008, down to 28 in 2009 and has only 18 tournaments under contract for 2010. The goal is 25.
