Can you name the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in America for the past 32 years?

It is the Ford F-series pickup truck and for 2010 the country’s best-selling vehicle has been given some additional capabilities. In addition the 2010 Ford f-150 pickup truck no looks a lot like its Heavy-Duty brothers.

Ford’s engineers and product planners are betting that buyers of standard size pickup trucks use them more for work than transportation. With that in mind, they upped both the towing capacity and the payload capacity of the F-150 trucks. But they didn’t forget about driver and passenger comfort either. During our test of the new 2010 Ford F-150 Platinum model we found the newest F-150 to be the quietest, smoothest and most comfortable F-150 we have tested.

Our tester was powered by the 5.4-liter V-8 engine which is rated at 310 horsepower and it made the F-150 feel light on its feet. The V-8 was backed with Ford’s new 6-speed automatic transmission, but even with six speeds, the best fuel economy the big truck could deliver was only 19 miles per gallon on the highway. I think the Ford people got it right – the F-150 will be purchased by people who need the size and load capacities for work.

Inside, trucks have changed from utilitarian metal to limousine-like levels of quiet and comfort. Our Platinum level tester had richly upholstered leather seats and other upscale interior styling cues. For 2010 the My Key programmable vehicle key is standard on all F-150 models except the base XL model. The upscale King ranch and Platinum models get heated second row seats for 2010 and a power sliding rear window with a defroster. They also have a Sony six-disc CD changer. One feature we really liked was the integrated tailgate step. That’s the feature that Howie Long makes fun of in the Chevrolet truck television commercial. Could it be Chevrolet/GMC missed the boat on this feature?

Prices are limousine-like too. Our 2010 Ford F-150 Platinum tester carried a sticker price of $46,000 but the truck’s performance and ride lived up to the high price. On our scale of one to five, four tires and a spare, the 2010 Ford F-150 Platinum rates a five.
