We have good news and bad news about the Chevrolet Cobalt.
The Chevrolet Cobalt is a nice surprise and the SS model is an even better surprise, but it, of course, is scheduled to go-away soon. Just when GM gets is right, the vehicle goes away. Hmmmm?
First the good news, fuel economy is good; second the bad news. The bad news is that the high-performance turbocharged SS coupe is going away sometime during the 2010 model year and it is, of course, our favorite Cobalt
For now there are four models available: Base, LS, LT and the soon to go-away turbocharged SS model. The first three models are fitted with a 2.2-liter, normally aspirated engine rated at 155 horsepower. And it requires only regular fuel.
The Coupe SS model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rated at a stompin’ 260 horsepower and requires premium fuel. Fuel economy for the standard Cobalt’s with the manual transmission is rated at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 37 miles per gallon on the highway.
Safety features on the Chevrolet Cobalt include ABS, traction control, antiskid and curtain side airbags. Acceleration with the turbo is great, but even the normally-aspirated 2.2 is O.K. just don’t expect it to be a rocket.
We found the body structure to be solid, so the ride was pretty good. The SS is stiff, but not harsh. Handling is competent, but certainly not sporty. On our scale on one to five, four tires and a spare we give the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt a four. The cobalt is slightly less refined than a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic, but it still belongs on your short list.
